Croydon is one of the happiest boroughs in London, according to the latest government statistics on well-being. It is no wonder then that so many businesses are flocking to make Croydon their home and that when it comes to office space, Croydon is in great demand.

There is so much going for it: an exceptional transport links backed by four rail stations and proximity to the M25 and A23 corridor; significant investment in arts and leisure, transport, housing and commercial development; economic growth that ranks 3.7 per cent higher than the London average; the second fastest expanding local economy in the UK. Croydon does have a huge amount to offer, especially for technical start-ups, scale-ups and established tech businesses it would seem.

Croydon the ‘tech city’?

Croydon is pushing to become known as a ‘tech city’. Around 8,000 digital, data and tech workers across more than 2,000 companies have made it their home, so it has every right to.

From early start-ups and growing scale-ups to established organisations such as dotdigital Group plc and global business phone system provider Natterbox, there is a huge community building, all eagerly taking advantage of Croydon’s vibrant co-working and café-culture collaborative atmosphere.

Croydon Digital, the voice of Croydon’s tech community, is an online shared space that brings together Croydon’s residents, community groups, businesses and the council to encourage collaboration and promote the area’s digital scene to accelerate the digital revolution that lies at the heart of Croydon’s exciting regeneration.

The Croydon Digital Service, a newly created and dedicated digital team within the council, is taking an active role within the digital community, looking after internal technology services and developing new, digital-age services for residents as well as supporting the development of Croydon as a digital place. With such strong backing, this is one reason why Croydon has the potential to find itself on the tech city map. But there is a lot more.

Cultural mecca

Croydon is well known for its fascinating and somewhat far-out cultural landscape. From the Boxpark drinking and dining scene created from refitted shipping containers to the craft brewery, street art (including the ‘Bitten Phone Box’ sculpture), retro games arcade, virtual reality gaming lounge, comedy club and festival scene, there is a great deal going on here, much of it pretty revolutionary and some of it rebellious, perfectly suited to the techie personality.

Support services

Croydon offers a range of services specifically for technical businesses. There’s the cutting edge co-working hub TMRW with its onsite café and dedicated tech events, and the Sussex Innovation Centre, a business incubation network that supports entrepreneurs, start-ups and scale-ups across the south east of England. As part of the University of Sussex, the centre offers support and seed funding to help build confidence and skills and increase students’ chances of commercial success.

Digital strategy

Croydon’s local authority is dedicated to making sure everything is in place to help technical businesses to flourish. Its digital strategy for 2019-2024 is based around recognising the way the internet has transformed day to day life, and harnessing that change to deliver better outcomes for the people of Croydon. The council is committed to finding ways to tap into the young and culturally diverse population (Croydon has the highest number of under-18s in the whole of London) so that a future talent pipeline is ready and waiting for tech employers to tap into.
